I'm curious what you guys think. Is Costa Rica generally safe for a woman to visit by herself? Is there anything I should be aware of?

If you are not from there, and you are not a local, I would be careful while you are there. Even in America as a tourist you can be taken advantage of. I ended up alone in Paris and it was uncomfortable being lost alone. The people in Paris were very nice, but I am a man and still it just isn't a comfortable feeling. If you are moving there, I would make friends with the locals first and then try to venture out on your own.

I am only travelling, and not considering moving to Costa Rica. I tend to be very fond of travelling on my own. It's quite liberating and forces me to really get out there and inetract with people instead of hiding behind my friend you know? But some places are a bit more dangerous than others so i was curious.

Jane, just be very cautious when traveling alone. Make sure there are people around. Don't take shortcuts and backroads. Just take the main streets where more people are, that will increase your chances of no crime.

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
