I believe Mexico will be the least of your problems in locating safe places to stay.

If you took a bus for that route (California to Costa Rica) it would have an armed escort for some or all of the way... otherwise you'd probably end up on the side of the highway in your underwear after your bus is stopped by bandits and your held at gunpoint. You may have less risk by car in that regard, but a good deal of the trip will be spectactular and extremely unsafe not matter how nice it looks.
You cannot compare your visits to Costa Rica with the "friendlyness" of the Pan American Highway.

Why is it that people keeps referring going to Mexico as a "dangerous" or unpleasant experience? Can't the government address this issue by providing a more safe gateway or route from main roads or airlines to tourists and visitors? Please clear this out.

howdy jah!i met a very cool dude who has travelled mexico, the baja and all the way south to central and south america for many years, interesting guy to talk to cuz he's been so many places and remembers them all, even the special places and people along the way. he lives summers in northern idaho on a off-grid commune and travels south for the winter, like me. it is a little hit and miss getting ahold of him via e-mail though. ron's e-mail is: mindmanyplaces@yahoo.com
here's a thought; i've been blogging and looking for a travel buddy(z) and have often wanted to make the drive myself, through mexico to central america, and have researched routes and the do's and don'ts, especially in some "lawless" places in mexico. it can get really risky if you don't know what you're doing, cuz ya gotta worry about the cops AND the robbers! anyway, would you want a fellow traveller to share the expense and experience??? cuz i'm heading to central america for the winter soon. i spent five months in costa rica just recently, and am looking to get back there before january, but could leave earlier depending on your "trip". also, i speak fairly fluent spanish and know how to travel on a reasonably cheap budget, know the cool hostels and even where to rent jungle cabins for cheap!
lemme know what your "trip" is and hit me back at: zoot2k2@yahoo.com "troy hunter"

I've always here and see on television how they depict how violent the countries in the Southern Americans are like. Usually it has something to do with kidnapping, civil and local cold wars. Can anyone clarify if these are all true and if it is true why isn't the government securing the safety passage of potential tourists and visitors by eliminating these road bandits and scoundrels? Hope someone can answer this inquiry of mine.

Are you referring to South America, Central America, or a specific country? Each has its own (and different) culture, benefits and problems.I doubt you'll find any of the countries to be similar to what you see on TV though.
