I have used the car rental reservation system at

orbitcostarica.com 15 times in the last 6 years of my travels to Costa Rica since I own a coffee farm there.

Harold the agent at orbitcostarica has always made sure I recieve new model car with no problems and the price and terms have never been anything but what I expected.

I have used rav 4, 4 runner, landcruiser, prado, corolla, yaris and always had good service and the agent meets me at airport to make sure I do not pay the 12% concourse fee inside airport.

The free shuttle takes me to the rental lot 5 minues away next to the airport hampton inn

I lived in Costa Rica for years and never rented, drove or purchased a car. It was a great change of pace not to have any of those worries.

I have been told it's better to just take the bus or use the taxicab to get around. I wonder why I keep hearing that. I assume it's simply because it's more expensive to rent a car or something?

Price, Danger, Stress, Scams (from criminals as well as the rentals agencies).

Criminal scam: at a stop sign you have a flat tire. Some bystanders help you with it. When its changed you notice all your luggage is missing. Of course the flat wasn't an accident.

Rental Agency: not marking all the preexisting damage and charging you for it. Taking your whole deposit (usually $2, 500) when real damage is less.

Eep! Now that makes a lot of sense. But wouldn't it be easy for people to steal your luggage if you travelled by bus? I guess not if you clutch the luggage with a death grip heh.

Yes, but consider the following options...

Steal luggage from REALLY RICH Gingos that have a rental car... or steal luggage from a cheap rich gingo that takes the bus.

Watch out for sure in the bus station. On the buses into the more rural areas you shouldn't have much trouble.

We always rent cars wherever we go and Costa Rica is no exception. The bus is like 1.00 to ride, but you are risking have items stolen more so than you would in a car.

Also, it's probably uncomfortable and crowded in a bus. I also don't know if you are allowed to hold on your luggage or if it goe sunder or on top of bus. That would then make it much harder to keep an eye on my items.

The buses that go between cities are very comfortable. Luggage can go on the rack, under the bus or with you in the seat. These are usually 1 person per seat and no one standing.

Some of the in city buses are nice, some are more like old school buses. Sometimes these are crowded.

You don't see the "chicken" buses in Costa Rica.

If you are standing on a bus and it is crowded WATCH YOUR POCKETS!

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
