Getting around Costa Rica

I am planning to take a vacation with my hubby next year to Costa Rica and it has been a habit of ours to island hop, and explore the best of every country. I have a number of questions and here they are:

What are the normal means of transportation in Costa Rica?

How much does a regular fair cost when going form one city to the other?

What are your recommended ways/routes to travel?

It is good to actually have time to go out and have a vacation. And I can say that Costa Rica is such a lovely country to be. I would like to actually go there and be able to explore more. However, I am interested in learning about some of the mode of transportation in the country. It would be great to hear from all of you guys. Thanks a lot and good day to all.

Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica.
