Kelly from Tennessee -

I will be travelling to Costa Rica in a month and I plan on taking my laptop. It does have wireless service or I could plug it in somewhere if they have internet shops.

Does anyone know what the internet service is like?

I was actually about to ask that too. I do have a laptop and I always take it with me during my travels. I don't know if it will be a good idea to bring it, that's why I wanna know too if Costa Rica's establishments offer internet and how was the internet like.

If you have a wireless (WIFI) card in your PC, you will be able to connect to any "public" wifi network.

Your laptop will work fine. You find that the internet services are less reliable than you are used to. Some email services might not work as Costa Rica is known for sending spam...

And some providers are silly... the cable company in Alajuela seems to have 1 or 2 IP addresses allocated for ALL their users. So, if someone is abusive and gets the IP address blocked... well.. that makes it much more likely that your IP is blocked.

You may also find access to be spotty in the more rural or beach areas. If it is important, verify exactly what service is available at your hotel or what cybercafes nearby offer.

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
