When travelling in Costa Rica, I found that one of the most enjoyable things to do was to go shopping in the open markets for the local fruits and veggies. I was staying in a friend's home, so I got to pick things I had never eaten before. The vendors were all very nice and there were many families including their children manning their "stores". If I was unfamiliar with a particular fruit or vegetable, they would let me have a taste.

Then you will go home and find that fruits and veggies are old, poor tasting and expensive. Why are organes in Costa Rica (grown near the equator) often green skinned but ripe. While oranges we are used to in the USA are always orange. The oranges grown well below the equator in South America are also orange.
Don't let the green color turn you off to oranges in Costa Rica.

We always enjoy our trips to the Escazu market. We went this past Saturday and picked up some of the freshest fruits and vegetables that have graced my crisper in quite awhile. Whats available at the grocery store just can't beat what kind of deals and freshness you get while shopping the produce stalls at this weekly event. For $16 I got lots of...asparagus, mushrooms, apples, strawberries, blackberries, potatoes, a beautiful bag of mixed veggies (little corns, carrots, green & yellow zucchini), broccoli and a slushy drink for my kid.
Because of all the sights and smells, it can be an adventure for your sense and possibly a test in your Spanish skills! I'd say its fun for the whole family.
I in fact wrote a blog about it all just yesterday! (you can see my blog link in my profile)

With all that great natural food available and so cheap... why keep your kids hooked on unnatural sugary stuff like a "slushies" Ugh! The same goes for the fruit drinks they make all over costa rica... fresh fruit.. water and then a pile of sugar in the blender... when a nice combination of just fresh fruit and water would have made a tastier, healthier drink!
