What is the latest information there about a possible hurrican in the next week? Just saw a report on FOX News and wife is leaving Friday for a two-week trip there. Any information appreciated.

I'm leaving tomorrow, should I be nervous?

Costa Rica ain't Mexico.

It doesn't have the same weather patterns.

It shares only the language in common.

Check out the many, many weather sites on the net and you'll see the hurricanes are always north of Costa Rica.

Other than hurriances, what other types of natural "disasters" happen at Costa Rica? Especially during summers? I'm curious because I am visiting this summer and will be camping so i should know what to prepare for heh!

Comment #4 Old Grump from San Jose -

Hurriances basically don't happen in Costa Rica... maybe a little on the caribbean coast. Costa Rica is too far south to be in the major hurriance area.

You have two natural disasters to watch out for:

Earthquakes and volcanos. I believe they consider 19 volcanos to be active. If you are lucky you will see hot lava shoot out of the Arenal Volcano.

It is very, very rare that there is enough activity to endanger the local community. Though it is common that you can see and/or hear activity.

I think the last time there was a major volcano eruption in Costa Rica was when JFK visited.

Ahha okay thanks for the heads up. Man it must be surreal and amazing to see hot lava shoot out of the Arenal Volcano! I could never imagine. Have you see this before?

Comment #6 Johnny from the river banks of the Mississippi -

I am totally surprised there are that many active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Are they as big or a bigger threat than another natural disaster like an earthquake or tornado. What is prepared to prevent the lava from exploding on everything and injuring the people?

Comment #7 Old Grump from San Jose -

At Arenal Volanco most people who die, are dead because they hiked up too close.

Comment #8 matt from nowhere, earth -

Haha good point there Old Grump. It's only common sense to not hike too close. How often do people die due to this per year? I would imagine it's be rare.

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
