Are there any polluted or dirty beaches in Costa Rica that people should stay away? Or are all beaches basically clean and safe to swim in etc?

Really none of them are safe as there are no lifeguards and some undertoes and currents that may take you away.

For the most part they are probably clean.

However, one might want to check out their sewage system as I am told there is just one treatment plant and the rest is just dumped in that big puddle of water.

Hmm, thanks for the information. I guess it could be pretty dangerous to not have lifeguards. But i have swam at many beaches that did not have lifeguards though.

So they are clean, but what about animals. Are there any poisonous or dangerous creatures to be aware of in the water?

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
