James,

I would like to find out more about you as well as some references. I am interestred in building a combination log home with a base of some concrete/ stone work. I am just beginning to explore some of my options. I have a log home on the market in Eastern Canada but live in Costa Rica full time now. I recently purchased another property and will want to build in the next year or two. Have you been to Costa Rica previously? if so, what parts of the country have you been to?

Thank you,

Sharon

Here in CR there are only a few types of wood suitable for log building but preffered for furniture Cedro and Guanacaste. Nobody with half a brain cuts them until they are 3 feet plus across due to their value for the furniture builders.

Teac is fair but still gets munched by insects ( don't believe what they tell you) and is expensive, often contract grown for floor companies, and often not available, period.

Guachepelin is great but far to crooked and usually unavailable due to MINAE restrictions on cutting native trees.

In the short. Get a cement mixer and block trowel.

Log homes are not really practical in the tropics and CR's restrictions on cutting trees make it even more difficult even if you really wanted to.

James.

Contact Arenal realty.

There are some guys building small log "cabins" that you might hook up with.

Sharon. Be careful when researching wood.

The Ticos will tell you " oh sure It's great for that" when in fact is some garbage like Laurel or Cabulla.

The Ticos will tell you what they think you want to know... or basically answer yes for anything.

It is best to stick with the tried and true... cement construction and no more than 2 stories...

Every wonder why San Jose has one "tall" building (ie: 15 stories) and Panama City is full of much taller builders? I don't think you can use earth quakes as the excuse.

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
