Visa , Permanent Residency, Job & Health Care?

Thank author of this post/commentHello,

I would like to move to Costa Rica.

- do I get a working authorization or working visa ?

- where to apply for how does itwork ?

- if you have a job (full time employee) do you get health care ?

Besides a working authorization, can you just apply for a sort of greencard or permanent residency ?

If so, how would that work ?

thank you so much for every little help !

Thank author of this post/comment"Different things...."

Moving to Costa Rica is one thing. Working (legally) is another. Permanent residency is another. Temporary residency is another.

Many people simple move to Costa Rica as a perpetual tourist. ie: leave every 90 days to get a new stamp in their passport. Some don't even do that and stay past the 90 day entry stamp (I don't recommend that).

I *WOULD* recommend staying in Costa Rica that way for 6 months to a year to see how you like it.

Then you could apply for a pensionado or rentista residency which is a temporary residency and has obligations that you stay in the country for a given number of months every year. It gives you a useless little ID card.

The above options do not give you any rights to work and you would need to otherwise apply for a work visa or other permission. Again, many work without permission though I don't recommend that.

After you have had the temporary residency for a time, 3 years I believe you can apply for permanent residency which is like a "green card" in the USA and with witch you could legally work and would receive a cedula as other Costa Rican's carry.

You could also after a time go to the further step of then applying for nationalization.

For details, search for the immigration website on google... and of course it's in Spanish. If you are not fluent in Spanish then I think your job search is going to be very limited.

Also keep in mind that the wages will be nothing like what you earn in the USA. You will probably wonder how anyone can live on the Costa Rican wages.

Hello and thank you so much for your reply.

Yes, I know that my questions are different things. I am originally from Europe and life since years in the US, and I was going thorugh many different Visas for working authorization, as well as through a permanent residency - which is of course different.

But I was asking these questions, because I simple don't know how it works in Costa Rica.

Now let's dig a bit deeper.

1) Temporary Residency

you recommend to live in costa rica for at least 6 month.. and I agree. But how can you apply for the 6 montth ? To be honest, I would like to get a temporary residency for at least one year. So where can I apply for and how does that process work ? And primary question, can I actually apply for ?

2) Working Authorization

That's of course a different thing, but I also would like to know how it works.... and how I can get a working authorization. I assume, I can not apply for that.. I assume I do need a company that I want to work for, and the company only can file for the working authorization, right ?

If so, which working visas do exist and how propably will it be to get one ?

Also, what's thpe timeframe to get one ? And can be filed at any time or only to a spcific time per year ?

3) Health Care

If you are a full time employee, do you have health care ?

If you are not working as an employee, and you live from your own business income, can you get a health care plan by paying your own premium?

Thank you so much for every little more information.

all the best and till later !

When you enter Costa Rica you get an entry stamp valid for 90 days. just before the 90 days is up, visit Panama or Nicaragua for a day or two (some will say you have to leave for 2 yeas, but that really relates to a tax exemption, I believe, the question is on the customs not immigration form), and return for another 90 day entry stamp.

That way with no paperwork you can live there for six months and see how it goes. Some do that for years.

Poor man's paradise

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose). Have you added a link to us from your website? (2301946615):
