Pilates Instructor moving to Santa Ana

I have found a position at a gym in Santa Ana teaching Pilates. I am meeting with the owner in late August. Anyone have any key points or advice they would like to give me? From what I am told privates there go for between 30-45.00 with the gym keeping 25%.

I will be bringing my 1 year old son, and then after I am established my husband and 8 year old daughter will follow.

Just looking for any info or tidbits, especially from Edward, the pessimist/realist of the board! :0P

It's not real till you do it in Costa Rica!

Now... 30-45 what? 30-45 colones? No... I think even that is a bit on the cheap side.

US$30-45 per HOUR? Now, that would be nearly impossible for any locals... and I think the Gringo there are too cheap for that!

US$30-35 per WEEK that might be in the ballpark.

I think in any teaching situation you'll do much better with a group. You have basically the same effort (same amount of your time used anyway) to teach 1 person or teach 10. You have nearly 10 times the revenue possiblities with 10.

For private teaching, what's the point of the gym? Are you getting marketing? Props? A cold floor?

Have you looked in the english and spanish newspapers to see if any pilates classes are being offered and how much? Then check them out and see if anyone is attending (paying).

Now if you really want to get some good wages. Offer piliates introductions to TOURISTS! Now there, I think you can find some that WOULD pay $40 for a session! Especially if you can add a Costa Rican Flavor to it.

Edward,

I did speak to the owner of the gym (he owns five) and he said that the clients paid 30-45 dollars for a private session. The reason I would want to be attached to a gym is the ready clients (he has over 6000)and he has the pricy reformers already available for use. and since it is in two of the higher "clientele" area (Escazu and especially Santa Ana) I am pretty sure most would be willing to pay it. In america private session go for 60 to 80 and up. So, half that is a great deal.... He does not have any "certified" pilates instructors so he feels we would be a great match.

any other ideas???

I eventually would LOVE to open up my own studio for tourists etc but I want to feel my way through the country/laws/legalizations before commiting to anything permanent.. ykwim?

We ARE planning on doing this the safe way (i.e. my husband would stay here and keep his job till we felt I made enough to sustain us, if not I would just come home)...

any further advice would be great!!!!

Lindsay

Lindsay I think with you there and your husband at home everything will work out fine even if you do have to go home. It's always a good idea to have a back up plan. I hope everything works out good for you.

I agree on a having a plan B. Try to have a foundation on which to base your demands. It is indeed encouraging that you are seeking enough advice. I am amused that Edward is being referred to as the board's pessimist.

I hope after you are established, I will follow your daugther and husband. Anyway, apart from the gym work, what else does a Pilate do?

Even in the event of things going right, people are always adviced to have a fall back strategy. It will not break a bone to have a back up plan. One of Murpphy's Law has it that when things really need to go wrong, they surely will.

Safeguard your intended area of venture by sealing the loopholes. A gym instructor's job is one on demand plus that is quite a large number of clients.

Having an alternative plan if your original did not work is a bright idea, i have to agree with pale_o.

You certainly have a good plan with you, keep track on your original plan. I think that it will work perfectly with good work. Soon you can manage to get your wife with you in there.

Just hoping that you can go visit this forum and drop a post as well.

Pilates is never really something that I had always known much about, that doesn't mean that I am not willing to learn, however.

What is Pilates

Developed from the rehabilitation techniques of Joseph Pilates, Balanced Body Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system using a floor mat or equipment, that will help you look and feel your very best. No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you. Pilates improves core strength, flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate back pain and other chronic ailments.

Will a Pilates instructor get a lot of work over in Santa Ana though? I cannot imagine if this would be the case or not, because I am not very much aware of the different areas of this strange thing that is known as Yoga.

Just like Lilit and Michei, I am also thinking of moving in Costa Rica and applying for a decent job there. I am open for any kind of office and teaching jobs. And for those who know where I can apply for such jobs kindly post here some details. I also would want to know more about how the employees were paid in this country. Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

Thank author of this post/comment"Employment in Costa Rica"

I think if you set your sights on US$2 per hour (paid in Colones of course) you'll be in the ballpark. Maybe less since you will be an illegal worker!

Now, if you are hired by Intel in the USA and they send you to Costa Rica that might be another matter all together.

Costa Rica is NOT someplace you can just go and get a job.

Is that so Bill, well I do not know whether I should thank you or get at your post. You have triggered two emotions on me, you broke my dreams of working and living in Costa Rica at the same time you give me a good warning. Well anyway, if that is the case then I will just stay here and maybe have a short visit in the country. Ciao..

Poor man's paradise

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose). Have you added a link to us from your website? (672435246):
