I have a friend that is a writer that will be in Alajuela for about a week in January. He was wondering if there is a good quaint bed and breakfast. He will be there finishing a novel and doesn't want to be around a bunch of tourists so he prefers a bed and breakfast over a hotel.

Los Volcanoes Hotel is a bed and breakfast in Alajuela. It is family owned and a very very reasonable rate. They offer a shuttle to and from the airport. It is in central park.

I'd take Vida Tropical over Los Volcanoes any day. It is a more quiet location. Easy walk to Central Alajuela.

The central park in Alajuela is not a good place to experience late at night.

Can you show or list here some other bed and breakfast venues around Costa Rica? With their pricing and address if possible?

I do love traveling and I always make sure I'd stay in a bed and breakfast station. And I want to learn more information about Costa Rica.

does anyone know if there is a way to get a complete list of bed and breakfasts with their contact info?

Keep this min mind... . Some people like to call Costa Rica various things like Puerto Rico or Costa Rico. Costa Rica translates to "Rich Coast"... check out Costa Rica. Costa Rica is also two words, not one, ie: Costarica or CostaRico. San Jose is the capitol city of Costa Rica. The San Jose International Aiport (SJO) is really located in Alajuela, Costa Rica (about 15 km from the Capital San Jose).
